Wii U - Shigeru Miyamoto gives us a tour of Nintendo's new console

The man who made Mario has high hopes for the first of a new generation of gaming machines

Shigeru Miyamoto

In 2006, Nintendo announced the Wii. Everyone laughed at the name, then everyone laughed at the crazy TV remote-style controllers. Then everyone stopped laughing, and there was an odd silence from industry analysts and pundits, who simply didn't know what to make of it. The public, however, did: the Wii became the best-selling console of its generation, cheerfully trouncing the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, by managing to coax non-gamers of all ages into having a go.

The BioWares and Treyarchs of tomorrow

A great developer can come from nowhere. Just look at Rocksteady Studios, known for little more than some entertainingly gruesome electric death animations before it sprung Batman: Arkham Asylum on the world in 2009. In the latest OXM list, we single out a few of the more gifted (or at least, interesting) developers that have yet to hit the big time, from two-year striplings to firms a decade old.

Why we are not ready for a download only Xbox 720

Why we're not ready for a download-only Xbox 720

Four reasons against dropping the disc drive

Of all the Xbox 720 rumours sluicing up and down the internet, the one prophesying expanded online features is the most plausible. Roping everybody into online has been Microsoft's goal since the original Xbox launched: the firm has always regarded hardware as a conduit for its services and brands, rather than the jewel in its crown.

Third-party upset over the trade-in market has lent this agenda momentum - crabby industry protectionists look on digital distribution as a means of clawing back "lost revenues" from dastardly second-hand sellers. But dropping the disc drive would have been a priority regardless. The only question is when.

Gamestop: either PS4 or Xbox 720 could fall back to 2014

US retailer doesn't think both machines will launch next year

Until around abouts five minutes ago, a 2013 Xbox 720 release date seemed all but certain. Gamestop's chief marketing officer Ashley Sheetz and CEO Paul Raines have introduced a note of caution, however - the company expects either PS4 or Xbox 720 to join the Wii U at retail next year, but not both.

Just to pour a bit more oil on the uncertain waters of the next Xbox, a new report has emerged suggesting that the console may miss its expected 2013 release date.

EA: now is a bad time for new IP, best wait for "spectacular" next gen consoles

http://www.oxm.co.uk/45534/ea-now-is-a-bad-time-for-new-ip-best-wait-for-spectacular-next-gen-consoles/

"The market doesn't reward new IP this late in the cycle"

Sucks to be you, Dishonored, Remember Me and Watch Dogs - you're strolling into the commercial equivalent of quicksand. Or at least, that's what EA's president of labels Frank Gibeau would have us believe. Speaking to GI, Gibeau has reiterated the popular view that it's unwise to launch new IPs late in a hardware generation, and advocated innovating within established franchises instead.
