Angry Birds' Rovio doubles its revenues

Business has been good for the Angry Birds developer as the company's revenues doubled year-on-year in 2012.

The studio's revenue was €152.2m, up 101 per cent from 2011's €75.6m. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) grew by 64 per cent to €76.8m.

“2012 was another record-breaking year for Rovio. We doubled our revenue with an EBIT margin of 50 per cent, more than doubled our headcount, established new offices and a New Business Ventures unit,” said Rovio CFO Herkko Soininen.

Like the year before, merchandising accounted for a large chunk of the company's revenue. Rovio's Consumer Products business unit's revenue showed a yearly growth of over 300 per cent, and made up almost half of the company's total revenue.

Rovio games broke the 1bn download mark in May 2012 and the total active monthly users topped at 263m in last December.

The Future of Minecraft: what lies ahead for the all-conquering sandbox game?

The Future of Minecraft: what lies ahead for the all-conquering sandbox game?

It’s hard to imagine how Minecraft could become any bigger than it already is, or how Mojang could spend the money if it did. Then the Mojang guys tell me. It sounds like a good plan.

Minecraft creator blames GAME failure on digital distribution

Mojang boss and indie ambassador Markus “Notch” Persson finds digital distribution a bit of a two-edged sword.

Mojang has announced that 453,000 copies of Minecraft were sold on Christmas Day. According to Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson on Twitter, “Across all platforms, Minecraft sold 453k copies on dec 25! Wowzers!"

According to Minecraft’s official site, 8.7 million copies of the PC version have been sold to date. On top of the 4 million Xbox 360 copies sold and 5 million copies sold on iOS and Android, nearly 18 million copies of Minecraft have been sold to date across all platforms.

REVISION: Spec broken down part 6

"The significance of proliferation in hardware and content for institutions and audiences"

This part of the spec may give you a headache due to the big p-word but it should not be much to worry you.

Again, some prompts and bits to think about this point after the cut.

REVISION: Spec broken down part 5

"The technologies that have been introduced in recent years at the levels of production, distribution, marketing and exchange"

Below the cut will be some prompts to consider what you would talk about in this part of the spec based on the games and tech we have studied, but with regards to new tech - if you are v comfortable with the concept of Digital Distribution and DLC along with some great examples I bet you could answer anything to do with this.

Again - not an exhaustive list, just me thinking about what we've talked about and what examples we have mentioned or what you might want to look further into.

REVISION: Spec broken down part 4

"The importance of cross media convergence and synergy in production, distribution and marketing"

As yesterday's posts, many of these posts are going to be very much stream of consciousness splurging of whatever points I think we have discussed or anything else you need to be aware of but make sure you know some key terms and know what examples you can mention. By all means, use what I write here but go explore - nothing I mention is anything you can't find yourself - YouTube, official websites, Facebook pages - it is all out there so go live it up!

Rockstar Classics - Free downloads!

http://www.rockstargames.com/downloads#/?collection=7

Never played the original top down GTA games? R* have the originally two GTA games (1 & 2) available to download in full from the address above. Another generous helping from the company, who still have GTA V available to preorder for £39.99 in a world where millions went out and bought Black Ops 2 for £45+ ... #Realworld

The "downtown" series of wallpaper backgrounds pay homage to the original R* guerilla marketing campaign of stickering New York City, very cool.

I am also in love with R*'s collection of wallpapers http://www.rockstargames.com/downloads#/?collection=1

The main players in the games industry

The players
(Taken from The Media Student's Book, Fifth Edition by G. Branston & R. Stafford)

The majors include Sony, one of the studio conglomerates, via its Playstation, and Activision Blizzard (Skylanders / Guitar Hero / Call of Duty / Tony Hawk / Warcraft etc), the company formed from the game division of the French media conglomerate Vivendi and the software company Activision. Vivendi was briefly part of the studio major Vivendi-Universal.

Harmonix, creator of the Rock Band series is part of Viacom, so some games companies are linked to the media conglomerates.

Many independent games designers and publishers, many from the UK, have been gradually consolidated to produce major publishers like Square Enix (Japan), Ubisoft (France) and Electronic Arts and Take Two (USA).

To make a comparison in which the hardware factor is stripped out, most of these publishers have a turnover from games roughly equivalent to a major Hollywood studio take from cinema box office (ie. around $1.5 billion). According to Activision Blizzard, which has major strengths in online franchises, the combined European and North American market for gaming software in 2008 was $24 billion. There are undoubtededly parallels between films and games in terms of how the Japanese and American companies publish games that are then possibly distributed in certain territories by their rivals.

Definition
Conglomerates: Companies that are made up of separate divisions, each with distinct identities operating in different sectors of the market - and possibly different industries altogether. They are often formed through a process of 'mergers and acquisitions.' When this happens in a specific market or sector, it is termed consolidation.

Renowned industry analyst Nick Parker claims that the tipping point - the "'iTunes moment" - will occur in 2014 when the games industry might have some parity between digital distribution and retail.

Case study: Kinect Sports Ultimate Collection!

Kinect Sports Ultimate Collection Out Now

18-09-2012
Continuing the September profile resurgence for Kinect Sports, an optimised double-pack of BAFTA-winning bestsellers Kinect Sports and Season Two is released to retail today under the title of Kinect Sports Ultimate Collection.

This angers me.. In our household, we have Kinect Sports 1 and Kinect Sports Season 2 .... If we were playing Season 1 and somebody wanted to play one of the minigames on Season 2, we would have to quit the game ... go get the disk ... put it in ... load up the game ...... and now this new pack would allow people to have both games' sports on one game disk.

Kinect Sports are excellent users of DLC to freshen up their games - Season 2 featured no less than FIVE DLC releases, often with entirely new sports - adding Basketball months after release.

DLC also came in the form of 'maps' - like with their Ski game and their Golf game.

Now it seems they are extending the shelf life of the Kinect Sports brand by reaching out to newcomers (not people like our house which already has both games!)

History of DLC as 'expansions'

This shows the history of DLC - it used to be expansions to enhance the existing game: EA & Westwood's award winning Command and Conquer Red Alert had two add-ons - Counterstrike and Aftermath - though remember in those days in the mid 90s it meant trekking to a computer games shop (Electronics Boutique.. Anyone? Anyone??) whereas now it seems that games are deliberately 'missing' elements that are then inserted as DLC later on down the timeline.

Note the small microtransaction chunks in the final picture. Often these days we will find smaller, more managable chunks and more of them. Fifa's Ultimate Team is an example of theis - packs of cards are cheap but players often buy many at a time, or at regular intervals. All of which gain the publishers £££ often without having to think about shipping or any other distribution than the gamer pressing a couple of buttons on their console.

Xbox creator: digital won't doom the "console experience", but big publishers face "pain and trouble" Gamers will always "crave" the "super premium high-end" games

http://www.oxm.co.uk/45749/xbox-creator-digital-wont-doom-the-console-experience-but-big-publishers-face-pain-and-trouble/

Seamus Blackley is one of the bright sparks behind the original Xbox, and more recently, the founder of mobile games developer Innovative Leisure, which gives him a pretty unique perspective on the industry's switch from boxed products to digital. In brief, Blackley thinks that talk of the "death" of consoles is, to an extent, misplaced. The nature of the box beneath the telly may change (assuming there's still a box beneath the telly), but the kinds of experiences customers currently expect of console games probably won't...
