the issues raised by media ownership in contemporary media practice; Below: Revision prompts to do with the part of the spec listed above:
Ownership in the games industry: aka AAA/Blockbuster games vs The Independent
What are the main differences between GTA 5 and Minecraft? (or your own Indie game of choice?)
Can these co-exist in 2013?
What is different about the way Indie Games are able to be distributed now as opposed to 10 years ago?
Think Xbox Live but also viral channels of communication such as YouTube – it was players recording themselves playing Minecraft with their own commentary over the top that really sold the game to many!
Free advertising! = Wildfire success!!!
And the big boys…. Show that you know what a conglomerate is and how these fit into GTA 5 and Skylanders Giants – so there is always somebody watching over you and checking how you’re getting on making money for them.
R* = parent company is Take Two Interactive. Skylanders Giants = Parent company is Vivendi …. Via Activision-Blizzard …. Via Activision. Compare this to life in Notch’s dining room that can fit the entire Mojang company in!
So you have some freedom but consider also the impact of Verticial Integration – If R* need a distribution guy to get a trucklod of GTA 5 boxes to Game, they phone up Take Two Interactive’s distribution guy! Whereas indie game developers would have to find their own distribution company – at a price (every business wants to make a profit remember!)
